Stumbled across El Faro recently while in Auckland on business. Worthy of comment if for no other reason than they do pots of steamed mussels in several different ways. And I love (fresh) steamed mussels, especially with a few anchovies, capers and garlic thrown into the mix – Binibeca. Weirdly, as a kid growing up in NZ the only mussels I ever tasted were marinated – maybe we didn’t have steam back then? Happy to also report that El Faro’s fino sherry was as fresh as a little Spanish daisy.

Service was attentive and polite – I’ll be back.

A great gig, despite the nose-bleed seats. L’s voice has lost nothing of its richness – if anything, the opposite (my first introduction was an album my Mum gave me when I was 15) . His support artists were also kick-ass good. Fav songs for the evening: Suzanne, Tower of Song, Everybody Knows, and off course who can go past Hallelujah. Rod Laver was probably not the best venue, but hey, you take these thing as they come.
